1 Look, 3 Budgets: Blue on Blue on Blue

Dark navy, faded chambray, and mid-wash denim prove you can wear three blues at once and look like you planned it.

These days, a blazer is like a watch for most guys. Nothing in the day requires one, so you wear it because you want to. The chambray and faded jeans take the starch out, which means the jacket looks right wherever you land: a date at a restaurant you'd never dress up for, rooftop drinks on a cool fall night, the baby shower you couldn't get out of.

Chambray over lighter denim reads casual. Put a navy blazer on top and the whole thing picks up a classic Ivy-meets-American-workwear feel, part sixties quad, part eighties catalog. The fit has shifted over the decades, but the idea holds up. (Want the tour? See Blazer with Jeans Now.)

Worried chambray on denim is a Canadian tuxedo waiting to happen? Don't be. Chambray is a plain-weave cotton, lighter and thinner than denim's twill, so the two read as cousins. No different from wearing a similarly shaded blue oxford cloth shirt.

The penny loafers carry the same Ivy heritage, and one leather color ties them to the belt. A white t-shirt shows at the open collar.

Best part? It's a modern smart casual base. Swap the blazer for a Harrington, a leather jacket, or a heavy shawl collar cardigan, and everything underneath keeps right on working.
