After months of hot, humid summer weather, it’s understandable to want to unearth your thick, cozy jackets and sweaters, scarves, fleeces, and other ruggedly handsome go-to pieces. But a heavy coat often has a bulky silhouette, and an unexpectedly warm afternoon can leave you feeling overdressed and sweaty instead of cool and comfortable.
The solution? Slim, lighter-weight layers that play well together and create visual interest, making you look more pulled-together than you would wearing just a t-shirt and puffy jacket.
While typically the outermost layer is the thickest/heaviest, here we’ve reversed the order with an unlined cotton field jacket that’s about as light as a shirt jacket. Its olive hue and functional design is inspired by the original M-65 military field jacket; paired with the navy hoodie and black jeans, it has an urban edge.
A good hoodie is a true wardrobe staple. This classic style isn’t too thick, so you can wear it in those “transitional” early fall weeks. And its slim fit layers well without adding bulk.
In an outfit of mostly solid, neutral colors, the thin sailor-striped cotton crew sweater adds pattern and texture. If you tend to avoid horizontal stripes, keep in mind that the hoodie and utility jacket break up the pattern and keep it from being overwhelming. See how we styled it for a first date.
Jeans are always a fall essential, but with the navy hoodie and striped sweater, we wanted to stay away from blue denim. This slim black selvedge pair has a modern feel that makes the overall look land a bit more in the street style realm.
The black denim also contrasts with the footwear: a pair of black cherry Red Wing Beckman boots that nicely balance refined and rugged elements. Some sizes are still available on Amazon, but this exact boot isn’t available on Red Wing's site anymore, the Blacksmith is a great alternative that will keep you dry, comfortable, and stylish all year round.
