Gift Ideas for the Women We Love

Gift Ideas for the Women We Love
Celebrity menswear stylist Ashley Weston shares her inside intel for nailing the perfect gifts for the women in your life.

Every year around this time, I’m asked by my clients to suggest gifts for their wives, girlfriends, co-workers, sisters, mothers and the other women in their lives. So instead of keeping these ideas to myself, I figured I’d help you look like a classy mofo by putting together this gift guide for all the women in your life.

Don’t be the guy pacing up and down the jewelry counter on Christmas eve, or the schlub buying Chanel No 5 because you saw a commercial for it. Or worse yet, don’t give horrible, useless or flat-out tasteless gifts!

You’ll find multiple options to fit any budget and any woman in your life below.

Gifts for Your Mother Or Mother-In-Law

In my experience, outside of your wife or girlfriend, your Mother or MIL is the hardest person to shop for. You want to get her something thoughtful because any Matriarch worth her salt knows how to mold the family to do her bidding and is a powerful ally, so get and stay on her good side with these gifts!

These are perfect because they aren’t things she’d normally spend money on, but she’ll think they’re super nice and luxurious and she’ll appreciate them all year long – I promise. See my descriptions and reasons for recommending them below these pictures.

I’ve recommended and given the ZAQ Noor Essential Oil Diffuser ($39) more times than I can count. I always hear back from my clients about how their mother’s “absolutely loved it!” Make sure to get the Aromatherapy Basic Sampler Essential Oil Gift Set ($19.95) to go along with it so it’s ready to go the first day.

The Jo Malone Cologne (it’s perfume) Collection Sampler ($115) is perfect because she can mix them to create her own signature scent and it’s a very high-end perfume brand that women love.

If your Mother or MIL is into comfy and warm things, the Barefoot Dreams Chic Blanket ($220) or Cashmere Plush Throw ($17) are a surefire hit. All women love this kind of stuff!

If she loves coffee or tea, the Kona French Press/Tea Infuser ($30) is right up her alley.

If your Mother or MIL is like mine, she’s a wine lover and will really appreciate the Gold Metal Wine Club ($285) subscription where she’ll receive 3 bottles of amazing California wines every month for a year. Or if she’s more picky, keep it simple and get her a Vinturi Wine Aerator ($20) so it can “open up” her wines as she pours them.

Gifts for Your Girlfriend or Wife

Your lady is the most important woman in your life, so show her you care and give her these gifts that she normally wouldn’t (and shouldn’t, in some cases) ever buy for herself.

Women and jewelry go together like… women and jewelry. So look through your girl’s jewelry and if she likes more ornate (complicated) items, then the Vita Fede Titan Bracelet ($390) will be perfect for her. If she likes gold or more “dainty/delicate” jewelry, definitely go with the Kate Spade ‘Dainty Sparklers’ Hinged Cuff Bracelet ($88).

Every woman needs a good, everyday set of earrings in her life. We also love anything from Tiffany & Co., so hit both points with the Tiffany & Co. Diamonds By the Yard Earrings ($550). Or go with these classic 14K Gold Pearl Stud Earrings ($69).

If she’s more of a necklace-type of woman and/or she’s at a computer all day, go with this stunning Dana Rebecca Designs Diamond Bar Pendant Necklace ($510). Bracelets will bang against the keyboard, which is very annoying. If you're looking for something more budget friendly, she’ll love this rose gold pendance necklace by gorjana ($67).

If your woman is into bags, then the Coach Shadow Crossbody in Pebbled Leather ($395) or Kate Spade Cedar Street Mini Nora ($198) is a slam dunk.

If she’s into shoes, she’ll already be drooling over and fantasizing about a tan/nude colored pair of heels, so oblige her and get either the Christian Louboutin So Kate Leather Pump ($675) or Steve Madden Varcityy ($63) heels.

If your girl is like me, she loves trying different fitness and wellness classes in the never-ending quest to get (and stay) in shape. Normally, I wouldn’t recommend giving a gift like this because it might imply that she’s out of shape, but this one is so cool that it supersedes any implications. Give her the gift of unlimited classes for a month with a ClassPass ($79). That way, she can she can chose and take as many classes as her little heart desires.

Every woman loves to be pampered, even the ones who say they don’t, so get her a gift card to SpaFinder and let her choose the type of spa she’s most comfortable with.

For Your Sister or Friend

The goal with your sister or female friend is to get her fun and utilitarian items that she maybe wouldn’t think to get herself, but will love and appreciate it when she starts using it.

Women love anything related to skincare and The Clarisonic Mia 2 Lavender Hydration Skin Cleansing System ($105) hits this spot perfectly.

Sephora Favorites Superstars ($75) – We all love make up. These are all of Sephora’s best selling make up items.

Bath Bomb Gift Set ($22) – A nice luxurious gift is something your sister or friend might not normally buy for herself, but she’ll feel extra luxurious when using these.

UE Boom Wireless Bluetooth Speaker ($100) or SoundBot Bluetooth Speaker ($23) – You’ll be hard-pressed to find a woman that doesn’t like pumping out the jams every now and then. My sister and girlfriends love using these in their bathroom while they’re getting ready in the morning. She’ll realize how useful this is when she has it.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera ($73) & Fujifilm INSTAX Mini Instant Film ($14) – Girls love taking pictures with each other. We also love more tangible things, so it’s fun to have a little polaroid instant camera on hand.

Nike FlyKnit Roshe Run Sneaker ($120) – At some point we all (attempt to, at least) go to the gym and try and get in shape. They’re super comfortable and they look great whether in or out of the gym, so she’ll wear these a lot.

For Everyone Else or the Hard to Shop For

For women who aren't lovers or relatives, your task with gift-giving isn’t to rock the boat with a tasteless, implicating or flashy gifts. You want understated, professional, with just the right touch of class. These gifts are perfect for these ladies.

I’ve yet to meet a woman who didn’t love candles or nice smells. Two of the best are Diptyque Votive Candle set ($90), or Voluspa Cut Glass jar candles ($34).

Like I mentioned in my previous section, women love more tangible items and if your hard-to-shop-for prefers pen and paper, she’ll love the Rolls Royce of notebooks – the Smythson leather notebook ($230) along with a beautiful Lamy fountain pen ($30). The pen on it’s own is a super nice, luxurious gift, too.

For the woman with a coffee mug permanently attached to her hand, get the the best hot or cold beverage mug you can buy – Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug ($31). Believe me, I’ve gone through so many and this is the best one, without question.

Anything Tiffany & Co. will perk a woman’s ears up. So get her these classy wine glasses ($25/each) if she’s ever talked about having wine with dinner.

If she’s really into wine, the Cakebread Treasured Classic Box ($110) is the one wine maker that everyone can’t stop talking about. She’ll love you for this wine recommendation, I promise.

We love homey, green and delicate things. The Hinterland Trading Air Plant ($19) hits these points perfectly. Plus it’s cheap, but doesn’t look it.

Alright guys, I hope this was helpful in the confusing and often mine-filled landscape of giving gifts to women. I’ve been suggesting items like these to my clients for years and haven’t heard any complaints yet! If you have any questions, I’ll be checking the comments for the next few days.

Happy holidays!
