Live Action Getup: Summer Neutrals

It’s easy to default to bright, vibrant colors when the sun comes out for the year – but lighter tans, grays, and whites create a gentlemanly (and heat-conscious) outfit.

This is a combo I wear often and love. Nice choices. I also really appreciate the tiered budget suggestions.

I recently picked up those AJ Morgan shades based on your previous review. They look awesome and, strangely, fit my large noggin.

Did you find yours smelled like solvents/chemicals when you got them? Does it go away?

  • Zac Silk

I’ve had a pair of white denim sitting in my closet since last year after the Primer article about white denim, but I’ve never worn them.

This getup just proves their versatile nature. I’ll have to stock up on linin shirts that are perfect for the summer.

The Gap denim lists the colour as salt. But these are white denim? I’ll have to keep a lookout for them.

    • oobleck

Once you start, you’ll be surprised how often you wear them. White isn’t just for Summer, either! White, camel, and chambray are a sweet Fall/Winder combo too.

      • Zac Silk

I’m going to start with white and Chambray and go from there. How have yours held up in the wash? That’s what I’m most scared of is them getting dirty and the stains not coming out.

        • oobleck

I’m not gonna lie: I have to be very careful where I sit down and brush against when I wear white trousers or jeans.

I can usually wear them 2-3 times before stuff starts to show. My “problem areas” are the cuffs where some suedes can transfer color, and the waist band, under the belt for the same reason. I save up my white whites and wash them all at once with a splash of color safe bleach in cold water. No issues.

Strangely, though, when I wear almost white (super light sandy gray) trousers or jeans I hardly have to give it a thought. Not sure what that’s about, but it’s much more forgiving.

          • Zac Silk

I have the same situation with the problem areas. I feel that mostly with side shoes I end up cutting my white jeans.

I’ll give a cold wash with some detergent when they get dirty though that’s a pro tip.

I guess we’ll have to have the same mindset about not giving it a thought with grey jeans and transfer it to white. I’ll just start wearing them as if they’re grey jeans.

I think you’re right I ended up going for a navy tee and brown chukkas. I cuffed the jeans to make sure it didn’t come into contact with the suede. But i think it worked out well. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/dfb9a173665595bffc71110c611a66589deb0579f4d4bb5a35a579d1ca25d44e.jpg

I’ve been having the hardest time finding linen shirts that accommodate guys with big shoulders. H+M’s stuff is so tiny

    • oobleck

Check out those from Uniqlo and JCrew/JCF. Uniqlo’s are a relaxed fit and can be tailored if you’re slimmer in the waist.

      • Toro

keep hearing about Uniqlo, but don’t like products I cannot personally try on before purchasing. Unless you know of a major retailer that carries them?

        • oobleck

Where are you that you have h&m but not Uniqlo?

I also can’t really wear anything called slim from h&m, but they have some decent linen blend shirts in a “regular” fit that are better, though predominantly cotton.

Like Andrew said, only Uniqlo carries Uniqlo.

          • Toro

I’m in AZ. Maybe I’ll check their return policies if I do mail order

I have been looking for an excuse to add a white pair of pants to my selection.

Do it, I was surprised at how versatile they are

  • Josiah Webster

I love how this website uses clothing that isn’t outrageously expensive.

      Thanks Josiah!

  • Serafin

FYI That h&m shirt is sold out.

    • http://www.primermagazine.com/ Andrew

Unfortunately Uniqlo is a retailer like Gap so other stores don’t carry the brand.

    • oobleck

The shirt Andrew is actually wearing (not the one in the collage) looks identical the the light grey one from Uniqlo (no collar buttons). It’s a great shirt!

Nice double monks, where did you get them from? And really liking the chambray half tuck.

      • oobleck

Thanks! Believe it or not, those are h&m “premium” line suede double monks. Pretty nice for around $75.

        • Zac Silk

I’ve seen the Dappered review of those. Joe over there said they hold up pretty well. How’s your experience with them?

          • oobleck

I haven’t had them too long yet, but so far I’m really pleased with them. The beige is a little strange: there’s a slight pinkish tint to them which makes them tougher to coordinate with things, but I’ve managed. They’re quite comfortable, the suede is nice, and they’re not junk. I’ve walked a couple miles in them with no blisters several times. I think I’ve never worn them with socks yet, except to try them on.
