Free Art Download: The Remington Noiseless 8 Typewriter

A reminder to quit complaining about how slow your computer is.

This beautiful illustration comes from the “Instructions for Operation and Care” manual of the Remington Noiseless 8 Desk Model. Produced from 1932 to 1941, this sharp, art deco typewriter was the laptop / tablet PC hybrid of its day. Advertised both for the sturdiness of a desktop typewriter with the “portability” of a smaller one. The concept of lugging one of these around is fun to think about. While a brochure for the machine marketed it as the first affordable noiseless typewriter, it originally sold for $105. Doesn't sound like much? Today it would cost $1,733.

It's a neat reminder of how far we've come – imagine living in 1935 and writing your dream novel or screenplay on one of these. Without the ability to surf Reddit or Facebook, I might actually get some work done.

To download, click on the link above, then click on “File” and “Download”.

Follow the instructions on the Hemingway download post to have it printed for a dollar and set in a $5 frame from Wal-Mart. The file is sized to be printed to fit in a 11×14 frame. You'll need to print on ledger size paper, which is 11×17, then cut off the excess using the border I built in.

If you make one I’d love to see it!
