Moonshine, A Gentleman’s Cologne

Buying cologne these days is an annoying process. Do you buy a scent that you like? Or do you buy a scent you think the woman in your life will like? Do you buy something classically masculine and run the risk of smelling like your grandfather? Or do you buy something modern and feel like you’ve rubbed lemon peels and rose oil on your neck?

It shouldn’t be this hard, and it doesn’t have to be this way. That’s what led a small group of entrepreneurial friends in Dallas to start their own brand of cologne. The promise? A scent as masculine as it is modern. Classic but not out of style.

And they hit the nail on the head.

The smell reminds me of gin and leather, which satisfies our masculine requirement, with a sweetness that feels modern without smelling flowery. It provides a consistent ambience but isn’t overpowering.

The small business story behind the brand is just as exciting as the product. Co-founder Matt Moore recently wrote a case study for Art of Manliness on their first year of being in business, and it is a fascinating portrait for anyone thinking of starting their own small business. The cologne is hand-bottled by the three founders, how cool is that?

Check out Moonshine on their website.

I really like a distinctive scent which most people can’t find in their local Sephora, department store, etc – but purchasing cologne online is a fail – I have to try the scent and then test it for a few hours to see how it smells on my skin.

Most online retailers don’t send you a tester – I just emailed the Moonshine folks to see if they will. Update to follow.

BTW, good job, I love this site!

For anyone wondering, they do offer 1 ml sample vials for $5.95 (includes shipping). I sent them an email last week about it since I’ve been very intrigued, but refuse to pay so much for a cologne I’ve never had a chance to smell. This actually reminded me that I still needed to order my sample, so thanks Andrew!

For a sample, send payment (via Paypal) to colin@eastwestbottlers.com with your shipping address.

Yeah, if they upped the price to $300 and claimed to have been making cologne for 200 years they would sell out like Creed does.
