Pat, the one thing that I don't agree with outright is not moving somewhere without a job. I've been in your boat for the past year and decided from the beginning to use the recession as an excuse to do things I wouldn't otherwise do if jobs were plentiful. So, for the last year, I've been all over the country. I lived in Nashville, TN for a few months where I learned to appreciate food-service employees and to love country music. I lived in Denver, CO where I learned to ski and worked and lived in a homeless shelter. And now I'm writing this from Cambodia where I'm a temporary house dad for a boys' orphanage. None of this would have happened if I didn't just commit to taking leaps of faith wherever they came up. I have a degree in Journalism and would hate to live a life where I didn't do anything worth writing about. Never underestimate the life experience that you can only get by really getting out there and LIVING. Thanks for the article.

I wasn't scoffing at the $10 per hour, although I can see how it comes across that way. The issue there is that the company interviewed candidates for a full time, salaried position with no intention of ever even creating that position. You're right though, few things are more important than networking right now, it'll do wonders for anyone searching for something in whatever field they happen to be in.

Interesting article with some good advice. I did the opposite thing you did, in that I lived on campus the first year and commuted for the next three. If it weren't for that first year, I would have everything paid off by now (5 years out of school)

The only thing I'll disagree with is "don't take any job". What you got yourself into is a pretty crappy situation, but I wouldn't think a very common one. You scoff at a 10$ an hour job, which is a little ridiculous. You just got out of college, what did you expect? You're not doing a lot to dissuade people from the perception that Gen Y'ers expect to have the world handed to them straight out of college. It's a recession, you're 21, do what your father and grandfather did and do whatever it takes to pay the bills.

The best piece of advice I have is network, network, network. I'm on my 4th job in the television industry, and have made it into a top 10 market, and I wouldn't have been able to accomplish any of it without the relationships I've built, both personal and professional. It's true that you never know where your next opportunity will come from. So, be friendly, reliable, and punctual... eventually something will happen for you.

Great article... pretty much summarizes what a lot of new graduates are suffering (including me). I am not giving up either :)
