Might I add that few people realize that going to a custom jewelry designer (which we are!) can actually get you a better quality diamond ring for LESS money that you might spend at a retail store. Most jewelry designers work out of a studio instead of a retail store and their mark - up is substantially less since they actually design as well as create the ring. They also go directly to diamond importers so lots of the middle man mark up is completely eliminated! So, by skipping the fancy crystal chandeliers- which you don't get to take home anyway- you can save thousands of dollars and present your loved one with a unique ring created just for her. How do you know if you have found such a jewelry designer? Simple. Any real jewelry designer will be able to take out a clean sheet of white paper, listen to you and draw a realistic picture of exactly how the ring will appear in it's final form. A real jewelry designer is not going to ask you to rip out a picture from a magazine so that they can copy it!

Thank you for this helpful tips. Engagement ring is indeed an important couple symbol. Its a sign of promise to marry the one you love. As for the men, it is a sign of the woman’ acceptance to be with him for the rest of their lives.

Thanks for the very helpful and thorough guide. I just recently started looking at engagement rings myself, and it's definitely a daunting task. My only advice would be not to spend all your time looking for the diamond--make sure you also spend plenty of time researching and looking for ring styles and ring metals that are right for your girlfriend. Once you find out what color jewelry she prefers (white or yellow), find a metal that also fits in with her lifestyle. For instance, if you're like me and have an active girlfriend who likes white metal jewelry but happens to have sensitive skin, platinum happens to be more durable than gold and won't cause allergic reactions (the technical term is "hypoallergenic"). Basically, if you do your research, you should be able to find THE ring and make her a very happy girl.

this is a great guide, but one thing i keep reading that also seems really important is to get diamonds that have been certified by an independent lab. i guess you can't even tell how your diamond rates using the naked eye, so it makes sense that you'd want to have it sent in to be evaluated by the experts. gia seems like the most respected diamond grading lab... they actually invented the whole 4c's thing. to me it seems well worth the price of the certificate to know for sure that i'm getting what i pay for.
