It’s late December and we’re well into the danger zone of Christmas shopping. Crowded malls, long lines, and sparse racks of strangely scented candles. Odds are as a man, you’ve been down this road before. We get it. Why shop for Christmas presents in November when Christmas is in December? That little delay then turns into a repetitive cycle of “I’ll get to it tomorrow” and before you know, it’s Christmas Eve and you’re walking a mile through a wet parking lot and you still don’t know what you’re going to get her.
Relax. We’re here to help and take the edge off your Christmas shopping. We’ve scoured the internet and the minds of our lady friends to come up with eleven great gifts that you still have time to get. After all, there is overnight shipping still available, so it’s never too late. But do yourself, and your girl, a favor and get the shopping done now. Unless you want to show up late to Christmas dinner with a “Mossy Rain” Candle and a bag of Christmas M&Ms and just give up on having sex in the New Year.
1. Perpetual Paris Perennial Calendar ($49)
With this cleverly designed calendar system, your girlfriend can know what day it is and spend time every month doing something she inexplicably loves – decorating. This three foot by three foot system is a collection of Parisian photographs with days of the week (represented by letters) and numerals from one to thirty-one held together by clear photo-clips. Every month, the calendar is rearranged to reflect the appropriate calendar layout. A nifty conversational piece that eliminates the need to ever buy anothecalendar.
2. Three French Notebooks ($16)
All girls love France for some reason and it’s best just to use this to your advantage rather than try to rationalize it. For every day notetaking, recipe jotting, or letter writing (some people still do this), skip the business like Steno pad, the nice but ubiquitous moleskin, and instead choose these beautifully designed books that have both lined and unlined pages.
3. Black Ink Nesting Bowls ($36)
If you’ve ever had to try to stack or store measuring cups and mixing bowls, you know that a solution to this problem is worth well over $36 and could be one of the greatest gifts in the history of gift-giving. Clean up the clutter in your kitchen and maybe pair this with some high-end baking ingredients to please her desire for organization and cleanliness, appeal to her love of cooking, and safely and subtly suggest she bake some of her awesome chocolate chip cookies. Hey, no reason we can’t come out on top too.
4. Lush Soap/Body Wash Gift Package ($60)
What girl (or anyone for that matter) doesn’t like to smell good? This gift package comes with several unique smelling soaps, body washes, lotions and other girly bath stuff that is sure to be enjoyed. And to top it off it comes in a cool looking Russian doll inspired hatbox giving you the option of using the “From Russia with love” line.
5. Kiehl’s Gift Collection ($161)
This is the lotion, body, and hair gift set for the sophisticated woman in your life. It’s more expensive than Lush’s offering but is less girly and and a feels a bit classic. Plus it was featured on “Ellen” so you know it’s good – and since every girl on the planet seems to love Ellen, she’s probably already looked this item up and dropped several hints that you missed.
6. Giant Custom Fortune Cookie ($30)
This fortune cookie is no joke. We’re talking about almost one pound of chocolate covered cookie goodness, with your own personalized love note (up to 10lines long) delicately placed inside. She’s bound to be amazed at the sheer size of the treat (she’ll share) and enamored with the personalized message you so lovingly crafted – no cheating, write something from your heart, not a generic line.
7. Matching Jewelry to Some She Already Has ($85 and way up)
It may be a little late in the game for this one, but if you’re a go getter there is still time to pick out the perfect piece of jewelry. If you’re not a fashion expert, you may wonder how to pick the perfect piece – it’s simple. Look at what she wears, her earrings, rings, and necklaces. Then pick out something similar, or even from the same collection. If she wears mostly white gold, don’t buy yellow. If she loves diamonds, don’t buy birthstones, but if she’s into those kind of stones, there are endless array of of choices available.
8. A Photo Album ($25 and up)
Girls love pictures. They’ll snap a memory card full in a night, have triplicates printed by morning and have wallpapered your refrigerator before breakfast. Appeal to their love of photographs and memories by picking out some photos that best illustrate the last year. Select pictures of just her, just you, you as a couple, and throw in her friends and special occasions too. This takes some time and costs can rise quickly, but this is a truly thoughtful and always appreciated gift.
9. A Star Named in Her Honor ($54 and up)
Question: What could be more romantic than naming a star after someone special? Answer: Probably a bunch of things but this is pretty damn cool. The International Star Registry gives you the option of naming the star yourself or giving them the choice with a gift certificate. Starting at $54, you get a certificate that gives you the telescope coordinates for the star you’ve named, which you can program into a telescope to see your raging ball of fiery gas of love. If you’re in a real hurry you can get a print out with the coordinates after the completion of your online order.
10. Wine of the Month Club ($29 a month or $350)
A rather pricey gift, but one that keeps giving year round. There are several wine clubs available with an assortment of options, from just white wines to just reds to pairs, delivered monthly for a quarter year or all 12 months. This is a great way for the two of you to experience new wines together and can become something of a monthly ritual and time to bond, while getting a little tipsy, over premium vino.
11. Themed Gift Basket (Variable)
A gift basket of your own creation is impressive for a variety reasons, but notably because it requires thought, affection, and time. Choose something lovey-dovey like “our first date” or another occasion special to the two of you. Then fill the basket with relevant items. You could include a DVD of the first movie you saw together, photos, ticket stubs, souvenirs, or other mementos. Had a great time at an amusement park? Fill a basket with trinkets, advanced tickets, and other cool things. Big concert fans? Fill it with CDs, pictures, posters, and maybe even tickets to a show. Just make sure its personal, relevant, and all about the two of you.
There you have it, eleven perfectly possible and thoughtful gifts that you still have time to pull off for Christmas – as long as you don’t put it off any longer. Just remember when shopping for your loved one that if you put some real thought into who you are, who she is, what you do together, and why you love each other, you’ll find the right gift she’ll love. Though if you don’t trust yourself, then seriously pick something above. Happy Holidays and good luck.
