Jeff,

Ego is fear based--always seeking comfort and avoiding pain. The soul doesn't care, it just is. The soul, or your essence, welcomes whatever arises and sees discomfort as fuel for the path to waking up. Work with the two enough and they can co-exist without a big problem. They key is self-awareness.

Jayson and Andrew, good points. I suppose the plan to achieve what you want is outside the scope of the article, and knowing the first step is...well...the first step.

Jayson, just curious, what do you see as separating the ego and the soul? I've never felt a contradiction there.

Jeff,

Good point for sure. But remember this post is about "discovering" your purpose in life, not steps on how to achieve it. Many guys are actually pretty good at constructing a plan and following through. But a lot of guys suck at getting crystal clear about what they want deep down. And remember, I'm not talking about what your ego wants, but what your soul wants.

Jeff, I agree that it's the first step and that only knowing that isn't very satisfying. I think as Jayson says, though, the idea of knowing you can do great things but not knowing what they are is likely much more frustrating. Once you know where you want to go it becomes very simple to construct the plan you mentioned (which I also think everyone should have).

Just my humble opinion, but knowing what you want is only a tiny first step to knowing how to get what you want. If life were as simple as knowing what you want then we'd all be immensely successful. Constructing a plan to achieve what you want, knowing how to apply your strengths and abilities to that plan, and having the discipline to follow through on that plan are infinitely more difficult. I suppose you have to answer the first question first, but I wouldn't feel very satisfied with only that.
