I think it's because football announcers know (either consciously or subconsciously) that they bring very little to the table intellectually. They also know (as Justin has pointed out in another entry) that excessive use of abbreviations will tend to make one out to be an imbecile. Therefore they end up avoiding any and all abbreviations and acronyms as a not-so-subtle way of implying, 'look at me! I know what some words mean!'

How about just the very word "football?"

Examples:
"If they want to win this football game...."
"...he needs to throw the football..."

I can't think of another sport that explicitly states the full name of the ball more than football. Overused redundancy.

When I saw a tweet about this column, I had to check it out to see whether your #1 was the same as mine. And it was!

I have to restrain myself from throwing something at my TV every time I hear the "National Football League" thing. Jaworski and Schlereth are two of the worst offenders.

The opposite of “taking what the defense gives” would be an offense concerned only with sticking to their preconceived game plan, even if the opposing defense is clearly capable of stopping it."

Yes, this is the Detroit Lions who are completely incapabale of adapting to a a dynamic or changing offensive line. As for their not deserving of attention, it would explain why they have been blacked out for their last 5 games since they can't even sell their seats in their own home town. They still have 1700 seats for this Sunday's game by the way, so they may make it to 6.
