Pete: places like Gap and H+M will have some good jackets despite being in the "cheap and quick clothing business" (usually) but they charge accordingly for these nicer versions. Sometimes you can find certain styles for cheaper on eBay.

Stores like Heritage 1981, Topman, Revolve Clothing, Context Clothing, and Indochino usually have good jackets worth paying for.

Also, if you're into the military look, be sure to check out some surplus stores. Their gear is obviously built to last and you're usually going to get a pretty good deal on it.

Any recs for a good jacket? Nice advice all around, will have to check out those bags; I like STM laptop bags myself.

I'd also agree on the couch, but think it may not be that easy. We went with a local furniture place, but I still think the furniture was mass produced. After a couple years, it's already worn down . I'd think it would be nice to spend extra for an actual solid, handmade couch, but where do you find that? I found a place in the southern US, but I don't want to buy a couch site unseen, and I'm not traveling across the country for a couch. And as far as I know there's no local furniture manufacturer. Any ideas or tips?

great stuff, i would add to your list a nice mattress/bed/sheets. everyone is in bed for 6+ hours of each day, and a bad bed set can lead to back and neck pain.
