Thanks for the validation. I coordinate a group of dedicated people who telecommute for the last 5 years. We are lucky enough to work for a very progressive company that keeps minimal staff at the home office and uses groups like mine as their support staff. My crew of 23 comes from all over the country and with the exception of maybe 4 people, I have never met any of them. Yet week after week they produce amazing work making the deadlines on time. There have been some along the way that we've had to purge. Mainly ones who just couldn't grasp the concept of "shutting" the door, telling sister Alice she cannot just drop off her kids, and carving out 8 - 10 hours of a day that includes 24.

I have found the best workers are ones that don't have children to ferry around to various school/club activities or lots of social obligations that require their attention. I have created a document that outlines some similar ideas to yours including engaging your family in the process to let them know they can't just pop in for homework help or to see the turkey in the back yard.

As broadband becomes more and more available, I think we'll see more people engaging in these types of jobs and it will have less of a "you don't have a real job" stigma.

Hi Colt6 - thanks for the comment. Finding legitimate work at home positions really depends on your expertise. As a writer, I frequent Craigslist and Freelancewritinggigs.com. It's a lot of hit or miss (more miss than hit) but if you get one job for every 100 applications you send out, you'll steadily build a client base. It just takes persistence.

I know there are more resources out there depending on your trade. Try elance.com, rentacoder.com, guru.com, mediabistro.com and problogger.com.

Also try this page:

http://www.wahm.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=639450&KW=updated

Keep in mind that all of the jobs on these sites have hundreds of applicants and will often be low paying and highly competitive. My best clients have been built through local personal and professional relationships that were forged through community, rather than the Internet. If you have a current or past employer, approach them about any opportunities for consultant work.

Feel free to email me if you want more information about my specific path.

Great article. I have been searching the internet for over four years looking for a decent job online. I could not land any. I badly need some cash for college tuition. Could somebody please tell me the names of websites which hire virtual employees for real?

Andrew, speaking of connotations, my impression of someone who works from home is not negative, as it appears some people perceive. I think that if someone works from home they probably produce a very desirable, intellectual product, and I see that as flattering.
