Great read! Many of my Y-gen friends and peers will relate with what you've said. We've grown up with instant gratification - 200 cable channels, e-banking, instant messaging, email, fast food, porn, etc. This constant noise has made many of us very restless and wanting so much more out of our jobs - like a fast track to promotion, or a sense of entitlement. I like the point you made about "selling your time at work" and finding other means of fulfillment outside of work to gain back a sense of identity and sanity.

This is one of the funniest articles I have read in a long time. I wrote a similar article without the humor, but with the same point. We need to get out of our comfort zones and be happy for once. You only live one life - depending on your religion you might be reincarnated - but that will be a new whole life you have to live through. Either or your one life here or many lives you may have to go through - make it count and be happy.

Money Funk, I hear you. Sometimes no amount of attitude adjustment can make a shitty job less shitty. That's when you've got pick up and move on. If you sit in a cubicle feeling like a slave for the next few years, you're going to end up with a miserable life. Time to take charge! Good luck!

Well, I started to feel better. "Hell ya! I'll just change my attitude. I should be thankful for what my job provides me with - a salary to build my wealth and play."

It did't last long. I'm constrained, grumpy, and know I'll keep peddling away with these research forms until I get off my ass and change my circumstances. I'll keep self sabatoging my attitudeand continuing complaining because a cubicle is a structured cuilt by corporate big dog to keep us programmed to be a work slave. They know only far and few will break those constraints.

Luke, I think you're completely right. I would bet most guys never sit down and really THINK about what they want to do or where they want to go. It's only natural then, they're disappointed with how things turn out.

It's great that you were able to acknowledge flexibility is more important than a higher salary; that's a lesson many guys never learn.

I think it's important for every man (and woman) to determine what he really wants to do with his life, and do it. With realistic expectations and considering all angles, one has infinite options. Are you an investment banker, but would rather be a musician? If you're willing to drastically reduce your living expenses, you can! Many of the men I know a generation or two above me are not content in their jobs.

I spent years thinking and training for my current profession to prevent this. I wanted an intellectually stimulating, flexible job that provided a modest income. I had no desire to make millions, and didn't want to be a slave to my job. Others I know have taken other routes, preferring the long hours of a stock broker, etc. for the lifestyle it brings. Think long and hard about what you're doing or want to do, and then do it right and to its fullest.
