Nice article. I always try to balance my nonfiction personal development reading with classic literature. A somewhat offbeat but excellent introduction to classics is Michael Dirda's Classics For Pleasure. Dirda shows that classics aren't just good for you; they can also be really awesome reads. Like the Icelandic sagas, for example: talk about some badass male characters. Or Beowulf, for that matter.

I love reading lists! Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Modern Library 100 best novels of the 20th century: I think you can find it at randomhouse.com/modernlibrary.

You can find every Pulitzer Prize winner; search Pulitzer Prize on your computer.

Barnes and Noble classics publishes wonderful, affordable paperback editions. Go to www.bn.com/classics.

Visit the public library; there's a librarian who would love to help you.

Good Luck.

I hated reading BECAUSE of high school english. I never appreciated the classics, but I started reading a few here and there recently and they're really, really good.
