It keeps you in tune with the condition of your vehicle. Lube shops usually use crappy stuff, skip steps, and over/under tighten bolts. While you're under there you can check for leaks, etc. You wouldn't let someone else tune up your wife (at least most of you wouldn't), so why let them get under your other special lady's hood if they don't have to?
