The first thing I do when I buy a car is buy the Chilton or Haynes manual from Amazon.com. No excuse not to DIY on most repairs.

In response to this line:
"Just be sure to disconnect the positive (+) side of the battery before messing with anything."
It's a lot safer to disconnect the negative cable, because if your wrench touches the frame or anything else under the hood, you won't end up with a large hole in something that shouldn't have a hole, or a wrench welded to the frame when you short-circuit the battery. It does the same thing as disconnecting the positive side, only safer.

I've jump started a few cars in my day. If you follow the instructions above and the dead car still won't start, move the grounded to the negative terminal on the working car and try again.

If you get your car jump started, then you drive to another destination and the car won't start again there could be two issues. Either your battery won't hold a charge and needs to be replaced, or you didn't leave your car running long enough for the battery to recharge. Once you start your car, the electrical system is run by the alternator, not the battery. If you don't run your car long enough for the alternator to adequately charge the battery again, you will have problems starting the car.
